The recent Spruce Bark Beetle infestation, together with a spike in forest wildfires, caused a short-term decrease in log prices as Europe's wood supply from salvaged logs flooded the market. While the short-term surplus in salvaged softwood may persist for several years, the long-term impact will be a reduction in Europe’s capacity to supply wood to meet increasing global demand.  This meaningful reduction in longer-term global softwood supply can be expected to add upward price pressure on existing sustainable sources located beyond Europe.
